Oracabessa Bay Fish Sanctuary
Overview
Oracabessa Bay Fish Sanctuary is dedicated to protecting and restoring the coral reefs and fish populations of Oracabessa. Established in 2010, the sanctuary serves as a safe haven for marine life. The fish sanctuary is supported by the Oracabessa Fishers Association and Goldeneye Foundation through their partnership organization the Oracabessa Marine Trust. The protected area promotes sustainable fishing practices, habitat health and eco-tourism through spatial management, active conservation and community capacity building. Oracabessa Bay Fish Sanctuary plays a crucial role in preserving Jamaica’s rich marine biodiversity while fostering economic opportunities for the local community.
The MPA consists of coral reefs, seagrass beds, sandy bottom habitats, beaches and rocky shorelines, an estuarine river mouth and a mangrove lagoon.

Commander Reef is a fringing reef formation with a narrow and shallow backreef lagoon. The buttress zone of the reef slopes quickly down from the reef crest to about 35 feet in depth. From there a relatively wide fore reef continues to slope gently down to about 70 feet to the deep fore reef.
